Backups onto DL-Disks not a good idea?

Date November 28, 2006

I’ve had backup processes over the years which ranged from copying files between machines to fully automated systems using ATLs. I’ve never been happy with how we did it in Argolon as it was far too haphazard.
It finally bit me badly a few weeks back when I did a bare-metal re-build of a server [...]

What’s up with Vodafone?

Date November 24, 2006

Can’t access my Voicemail or logon to the web-site. Serious whatever it is. Ireland only?

FON up and running in Bandon

Date November 8, 2006

I ordered a FON router for €17 incl P&P last week and it arrived today. If you don’t know what FON is, the basic idea is that it is a wireless router which you use to share some of your broadband bandwidth with others. You share with two types of people - other FONeros called [...]

Comments from April to September back online and sxore remover now available here

Date October 31, 2006

As regular readers know, I used the sxore comment system on this blog from April to September. Whilst the intent of sxore was good, the reality fell far short. It was a big mistake handing over my comment data to a third party where that data was not transparently available to me if I ever [...]

Google Reader impressing but…..

Date October 25, 2006

I’ve tried lots of offline RSS readers over the years and they just don’t feel as comfortable as the online ones. After sticking with Bloglines for the longest time (with the odd foray over to Rojo to discover it was still dog slow), I’ve been giving Google Reader a whirl for the past few weeks. [...]

And we appear to be back

Date October 13, 2006

Of course I’m sure all of the ISPs will be refunding their customers for the lack of service for the past week.
Fingers crossed broadband stays up for longer than it did yesterday. What finally did the trick for them? The classic “have you tried turning it off and on again?” perhaps?

I think I’ll get my ZX Spectrum and V22 modem from the attic

Date October 12, 2006

It would be faster than this:

Note, this isn’t just home accounts, it is business users too. How much money has Eircom cost the economy in the South West over the past week?

72 Hours later and counting……

Date October 12, 2006

The eircom donkeys finally figure out how their own equipment works and re-enable BT customers. This is more than 12 hours after they re-enabled their own customers. We now have broadband again. Does BT have an SLA with eircom? A charge of something like €100 per customer per hour of downtime seems reasonable to me. [...]

I’m paying for this rubbish

Date October 10, 2006

I wouldn’t mind if it was free, but these cowboys actually demand payment for this joke they call a service.

Confirmed on boards.ie that there is a widespread broadband performance problem in Cork which appears to be due to an Eircom infrastructure problem as it is affecting both Eircom and BT customers. First reports occurred [...]

Multi-lingual Blogging

Date September 18, 2006

Haydn Shaughnessy started a blog back in May called Mediangler and in a very short period of time it has become a must-read for me. He is attending BarCampIreland and we’ll be badgering him to give a talk.
He did a post about blog.de the other day and it immediately grabbed my attention. This is a German [...]

Windows Live Writer

Date August 14, 2006

I use a bunch of different tools to do my blog posts, none of which I am entirely happy with so I was interested to see that Microsoft have released the Beta of a desktop blog writing tool.
I turned off the Rich Text Editor in Wordpress a long time ago as it was forever [...]

Has Netscape.com been hacked?

Date July 26, 2006

I’m one of these contrary people who thinks Jason Calacanis is right on the money (literally) regarding the payment of the top Diggers (or Scapers?). For amusement I headed over to Netscape.com and was shocked to discover my Netscape Netcenter login details from about 8 years ago did not work. Well maybe not that shocked. [...]

Podcatchers that support ATOM 1.0?

Date July 4, 2006

I recently passed comment that the Juice podcast receiver could not see the MP3’s embedded in Tantek’s feed. I assumed wrongly that there was something wrong with the feed. But he pointed out that Juice must not support ATOM 1.0 yet. From what I can see, development on Juice has stalled which is a pity [...]

Does a threaded RSS Reader exist?

Date July 1, 2006

In my last post I mentioned good old Usenet. For most of the 1990’s it was my main source of technical information and support. As it has been around for a long time, the Newsreaders gained more and more extremely useful features. The good ones allowed you to churn through very high volume newsgroups quickly [...]

Fix for IE7 Beta 3 Install Problems

Date June 30, 2006

I finally succumbed and installed the latest beta of IE7 to check out the RSS features, or at least I tried to. Six attempts and no joy. I tried everything and more in their troubleshooting document. I went on to the support site and there was a link to the IE newsgroup. And within two [...]

Sxore install test

Date April 4, 2006

We are playing around with using sxore as our comment management system in preparation for doing some posts on sxore, sxip and Digital Identity. Bear with us as we iron out some glitches.
