I have come to the conclusion that Vodafone will be roadkill on the path to ubiquitous connectivity. I’ve talked to several mobile operators in the past year and they all accept that they must become internet companies, they just don’t know how. This indecision will be fatal if Google decides to go global with Android [...]

Person required to do some short-term CSS+XHTML work
March 20, 2007
As LouderVoice races towards full launch, we have a requirement for someone to do CSS and XHTML work for us between now and then. Basically this person will have to take our existing design, apply it to any new features and pages on the site and tweak what is there already.
This isn’t a huge [...]
Suggestion for FON
February 22, 2007
Given the lack of free wireless at FoWA and the disastrous wireless at LeWeb3, it struck me yesterday that conferences are the ideal opportunity for FON to give people real hands-on experience of their routers.
Imagine if the guys had provided all the wifi for free yesterday? They could still use the logon screens so [...]
Bloody Nokia
February 13, 2007
I paid a fair chunk of cash for an N70 last year in the expectation that it would be the solution to all my mobile app needs for the foreseeable future and replace things like the Tungsten T. Overall it’s a fine but slow phone and there are some nice applications for it (Opera mini [...]
Decent podcast player for Nokia N70?
January 25, 2007
Can anyone recommend a decent podcast player for my phone? The built-in music player is a bad joke and only suitable for playing 3 minute songs - it has no ability to jump directly to a position in an MP3. It’s use of Spanish in the status messages is also interesting.
Ideally I want something that [...]
FON - Sometimes it’s nice to be wrong
January 22, 2007
I have written both positively and quite negatively about FON on this blog. I had no success recently with redeeming a voucher for a free router and started to wonder if it fact the reality matched the PR.
I did finally manage to order the free router by signing up with a dummy account using [...]
Java SE 6 (1.6) not compatible with Revenue Online (ROS)
January 16, 2007
John Collins recently blogged that ROS no longer supported Firefox and he was unable to get support from ROS on this. I ran into the same problem last week and just used Internet Explorer instead. However last night I tried to logon and got the same problem as Firefox i.e. no error, just sent back [...]
Dear Kevin McGarry of the Revenue Commissioners
November 28, 2006
If yours is the name at the end of correspondence to us, then yours is the name we ask for when we call to enquire about your letter. Those lovely harridans you have on switchboard in Dublin should then not say “oh no, he’s a director” and proceed to bounce us from one jobsworth to [...]

I did a post on this over at the LouderVoice Blog. Interested in feedback.

Recommendations please for reliable broadband in the Bandon, Cork area that makes no use of the Eircom network.
We were dead in the water for a week the last time. We’ve been crawling for 24 hours this time. BT needs to do something now about LLU or the Wimax boys will eat their dinner when [...]
FON up and running in Bandon
November 8, 2006
I ordered a FON router for €17 incl P&P last week and it arrived today. If you don’t know what FON is, the basic idea is that it is a wireless router which you use to share some of your broadband bandwidth with others. You share with two types of people - other FONeros called [...]
Comments from April to September back online and sxore remover now available here
October 31, 2006
As regular readers know, I used the sxore comment system on this blog from April to September. Whilst the intent of sxore was good, the reality fell far short. It was a big mistake handing over my comment data to a third party where that data was not transparently available to me if I ever [...]

The Outsourcing Adventure Part 2
October 15, 2006
We’re putting together a simple landing page for the new business whilst we are still in development. It became clear to us recently that we needed a logo for that to give a sense of identity and also to direct the initial colour scheme of the prototype.
I have always liked the idea of sits like [...]
The Outsourcing Adventure Part 1
October 15, 2006
When I decided to launch the new business, one of the first decisions I made was to outsource as many of the activities as possible. I spent 14 years providing design services and professional services in a variety of industries so it is something I am entirely comfortable with.
The main areas are obviously software [...]
And we appear to be back
October 13, 2006
Of course I’m sure all of the ISPs will be refunding their customers for the lack of service for the past week.
Fingers crossed broadband stays up for longer than it did yesterday. What finally did the trick for them? The classic “have you tried turning it off and on again?” perhaps?

It would be faster than this:
Note, this isn’t just home accounts, it is business users too. How much money has Eircom cost the economy in the South West over the past week?

72 Hours later and counting……
October 12, 2006
The eircom donkeys finally figure out how their own equipment works and re-enable BT customers. This is more than 12 hours after they re-enabled their own customers. We now have broadband again. Does BT have an SLA with eircom? A charge of something like €100 per customer per hour of downtime seems reasonable to me. [...]
I’m paying for this rubbish
October 10, 2006
I wouldn’t mind if it was free, but these cowboys actually demand payment for this joke they call a service.
Confirmed on boards.ie that there is a widespread broadband performance problem in Cork which appears to be due to an Eircom infrastructure problem as it is affecting both Eircom and BT customers. First reports occurred [...]
