Hadn't realised it was so cheap in the UK. No-brainer then!

That offer doesn't seem to have made it to Northern Ireland yet. It may be due to T-Mobile having no stores up there so it is only Carphone Warehouse. Paying full-whack for a phone without contract sounds like it is difficult everywhere in the UK (which is what we need over here to get our hands on one).

Its an easy call in the UK to get the G1 as its FREE plus you get an extra GB on the SD card than here in the US.

Best deal I have seen for the G1 in the US is $139.99.

AndFTP provides SFTP (SSH secure FTP) since 1.0RC1. It is available on lysesoft web site. Another new feature is it allows to open local file (e.g play MP3) from SDCard.

Ah, good to hear about multitouch. I saw a demo of it working on a G1 so hopefully proper support will come in a firmware upgrade.

The G1 was the wrong device to launch with. Apart from the touch-screen, it feels like a very old cheap design. Any of the more modern HTCs would have been better.

Great review. I also thought the Google phone would be the iPhone kille r, but I really don't think so anymore. I actually think they may have done some damage to themselves with this HTC release. Apple succeed because of their deep integration - they own the stack and the hardware and, while proprietary in the extreme, they still do a damned good job if you view it purely from a user experience perspective. With the recent change to a non-DRM iTunes, I see more openness coming from Apple in the coming year, I think they realise that the dogs of competition are snapping at their heals - they won't stand still and they have the technical edge.

BTW, The multitouch pinch metaphor is superb on the iPhone and is used for a lot more than enlarging photos. It's the standard UI action for increasing/reducing the magnification on a web page, in maps and this kind of thing. It's also used for bring GUI elements together.
