A great addition to UseAMap

Written on May 14, 2007 by Conor O'Neill

Vinny Glennon has a genuinely useful site in UseAMap. Starting from the simple idea of doing a “TinyURL for Maps”, Vinny has built one of my favourite mapping apps.

The most recent addition is a huge boon to those of us who live in The Google Maps Darklands - UseAMap is now integrated with Yahoo Maps too.

Both Yahoo and Microsoft do a far superior job of mapping West Cork than Google. This is very surprising giving how many billion dollars Google funnels through Ireland every year. I doubt they’d miss a few euro going to the Ordnance Survey.

Here is an example of a location I have set in UseAMap.

Check it out.

Nice site, nice idea. However, if you switch to hybrid view, I think you’ve placed Luigi Malone’s on the wrong street. You have it on that little street running down the side of Ka with no shops (or just a strange old furniture shop?) and opposite a pub that I can’t remember the name of.. :) Shouldn’t it be opposite the Opera house?

Ooh, didn’t check that. I think my original “it’s about there” stab in the dark was a little bit off, I should have used the hybrid view when doing it. I never bother turn that on cos it is always useless for the areas I am interested in (West Cork, Kilkenny, Wexford etc etc etc).

Google Map upgraded their Irish directory this week. You’ll find now that most towns and villages are up. You can also make a search for almost any place in Ireland and the google finder locates it. It has been a real relief for us as our app display content on Google map only!

Ach, whilst West Cork has improved it is still way behind Yahoo and Microsoft. Still can’t see our estate! Hopefully they’ll keep improving and maybe they’ll nudge the satellite more west of Cork City
