Recommendations for Web Application Development shops?
Written on July 20, 2006 by Conor O'Neill
We intend to outsource the bulk of the development of our application. This will be broken down into several areas including:
- Design
- XHTML/CSS
- Application development
- Hosting
- Operations
I have received plenty of recommendations for Design and some for XHTML/CSS but other than Ryan Carson recommending Nick in Plum Digital Media (and more on yesterday’s “How to build a WebApp” workshop later), it is proving difficult to get recommendations for top-class web application development houses. I am following up on some leads but thought it would be useful to cast the net wider.
We are completely open on the location but obviously we will be keeping a close eye on the cost. One-man shops are not sufficient for our needs, this is a meaty application requiring several developers and (as per the recent job posting) strong skills in architecture and scalability.
If you have any personal recommendations for dev shops in Ireland, UK, Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia or India, we would deeply appreciate any contact names you can give us. If you don’t want to post a public comment, feel free to mail me at conor [at] argolon dot com. Alternatively, if you know of good sites/forums where this type of information is exchanged, we’d appreciate that too. Of course, feel free to make recommendations on any of the other areas and names of ones to avoid are equally valuable.

Very interesting Conor - if I knew how to manage the same kind of thing there’s at least one other business idea I’d like to pursue. I’d be interested to know how you intend dealing with the intellectual property side of things and what kind of contracts and non-disclosure agreements have to be written up for this kind of project.
[trying to post this for my third time - the sxore catchpa is ridiculous!]
I’ve worked in the design services and professional services side of the business for most of my career so I’ve encountered most of the pitfalls at this stage.
IP ownership is very clear (all IP belongs to the customer) but it is still a strong reason for going with more mature outsourcing countries. At this stage Indian companies have that sorted but the Eastern Europeans and Chinese still have some learning to do.
I’ve been doing contracts and NDAs for this kind of work for a long time, there is nothing too scary in them. It gets far more complicated when you enter the world of licensing and OEM’ing.
But after all of that, the trick is to get personal recommendations, not just for suppliers but also for individuals within those companies. We’ve all seen someone huge like EDS get into terrible trouble due to bad speccing and over-commiting but I have had great working relationships with some of their teams.
Sxore is pretty broken for me at the minute and I may ask them just to give me a DB dump of my data so I can try and script up something to import them back into the standard Wordpress comments system. It was a worthy experiment but I don’t know if I can deal with the lack of control over my own data any longer,
